Gilroes Cemetery - Leicester

The winner of the best commemorative feature at the 2006 Cemetery of the Year Awards ICCM Conference was Gilroes Cemetery, Leicester. The “Fairy on the Rock” carving is in the main focal point at the new development which incorporates a foetal remains section, stillborn section and NVF section.

The lawn graves accommodate children upto 10 years of age. Lisa Handy, Bereavement Services Manager of Leicester City Council approached The Columbaria Company in 2005 with a design concept, which had to be in keeping with the new development. Carved from one piece of solid granite the feature took almost twelve months from placing the order to installation.

Every step of the way from the approval of the clay model the final carving was overseen by Lisa ensuring that her expectations were fulfilled. The feature has been very well received by the public and is a fitting tribute to all the many babies and children that are laid to rest there.
