HORAM CREMATORIUM, EAST SUSSEX

MEMORIAL GARDEN

Horam Crematorium is a contemporary new-build crematorium and opened during 2019.
Whilst the crematorium was still being constructed, The Columbaria Company was invited to site by The Crematorium Manager to discuss potential memorials for cremated remains.

At the point of first visiting site, the hard-landscape infrastructure of pedestrian footpaths had already been installed, a Landscape Architect designed soft-landscape plan was being implemented and final touches were being made to the crematorium building itself.

In possession of the Landscape Architect’s plan, the challenge for the Columbaria Company was to analyse the plan and identify where Columbaria products were best installed within the memorial garden with minimum change to the existing design.

An existing 1.8m wide footpath that led from the main car-park towards the crematorium was identified as an ideal location for Sanctum 2000 vaults and Barbican benches as concrete strip foundations could be easily be installed either side of the path on an ad-hoc basis in the future as demand dictates.

It was also proposed that new footpaths should be constructed off this footpath at 90 degrees so that further Sanctum 2000’s and Sanctum Panorama’s could be installed in open-spaces that were currently designated as wildflower grassland.
Upon The Columbaria Company submitting a Concept Design for the layout of memorials and a fixed price detailed quotation for their supply and installation, the customer placed an initial order for 32 no. Sanctum 2000’s, 1 no. Sanctum Panorama and 2 no. Barbican Benches.

The foundation and footpath construction works for the above were to be implemented by the main crematorium build contractor who was still active on site and they requested that a more detailed layout drawing (that included dimensions) be drawn up for setting out purposes and this was quickly prepared by The Columbaria Company.

Prior to product installation a site visit is often made by a member of the Columbaria team to check that the installed foundations are as per their submitted instructions before the installation team is sent to site and products delivered.

In this instance, it was observed that the installed foundations were not poured to the correct levels and remedial groundworks were required.

This first phase of Columbaria products was installed in the Spring of 2019 and since installation, the contractor has applied a covering of ornamental gravel around the base of the products (to hide any visble concrete foundations) and finished off the footpaths by laying a surface of golden coloured resin-bound gravel.
